5 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Vinyl Liner

5 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Vinyl Liner

Do you remember that great feeling of having a brand new pool in your backyard? The vibrant colors and patterns of the liner shining in the sun, waiting for you to jump in? The vinyl liner in your pool can last from 10 to 15 years, if properly maintained. However, there are factors that can affect its lifespan, such as not keeping the water balanced. Even if you do everything in your power to protect your liner, there comes a time when you need to replace it. Here are some signs that indicate when the time has come.

Fades and Stains

You can’t keep the vibrant colors and patterns forever. Over time, exposure to chemicals and UV rays will make your vinyl liner fade, as well as the patterns. Keep an eye out for algae, stains, and rust buildup. These are very difficult to remove. But the problem isn’t just the aesthetics here. With fading comes a loss of plasticizers, which keep the vinyl liner flexible. Therefore, the liner becomes brittle and doesn’t expand and contract as easily as before.

Water Leaks

Has the water level inside your pool gotten smaller? Use a simple bucket test to determine if the water loss is due to natural evaporation or from a leak. Leaks that are below the water surface are not easy to spot. This is why you should monitor your water levels, to catch a problem before it becomes a serious issue. Although some leaks can be fixed individually, more often than not you will need to get a liner replacement.

Tearing and Cracking

If you are experiencing water loss, you could be dealing with cracks or tears in the liner. When the liner becomes brittle, it can easily tear. These cracks will continue to grow in size, which will result in even higher water loss. But that’s not all. If water leaks under the liner, the pool base will get damaged. This will lead to even higher expenses, if you don’t take care of it soon.

Stretching and Wrinkles

A new, properly installed vinyl liner fits your pool’s surfaces like a glove. However, as the liner ages, wrinkles will start to appear. This is because it loses elasticity and plasticity. Once it begins stretching, wrinkles will form. Wrinkles can appear on the corners, on the bottom, or near fittings, such as drains. Although this can be due to age, damaged under-floor or under-wall spots can be the cause as well.

Liner Bead Problems

If the bead of the liner has popped out, and it doesn’t want to go back in, you might need professional help or a liner replacement. Most often, this problem appears at the corners of the pool, but it can happen anywhere along the walls.

The Pros and Cons of Above-Ground Pools

The Pros and Cons of Above-Ground Pools

Summer is the best time of the year to have fun and enjoy life. With temperatures going higher and higher, we all want to find ways to cool off. That’s why having a pool is so helpful! Unfortunately, not everyone can afford to have a fancy in-ground pool. On the other hand, that’s why above-ground pools exist. Like any other type of pool, they have their advantages and disadvantages. So, if you’re wondering if you should get one, here’s all you need to know about them. Weighing the pros and cons will help you decide if this is the right type of pool for you.

Advantages of Above-Ground Pools

There are numerous advantages to above-ground pools. They have their own great features, ways of installment, and aesthetic appeal. Let’s talk about some pros that might be enough to convince you to get one:

  • The price — One of the main advantages is the price. While not everyone will find them affordable, above-ground pools cost significantly less than other swimming pools. DMG Pools offers them for $1,200 to $5,000.
  • Easy installment — It’s always best to leave pool installation to professionals who will ensure everything goes smoothly. However, if you’re handy, you can easily set it up yourself.
  • Relocation — If you decide you’re not happy with your pool’s location, the swimming season is over, you are moving into a new house, or you want to resell the pool, you can relocate it easily. You will still have to make an effort, but at least it’s an option, unlike with in-ground pools.

Disadvantages of Above-Ground Pools

Not every pool can have it all and be perfect. So, there are some disadvantages to this type of pool. Many of these cons won’t make much of a difference in your decision, but it’s still helpful to know about them so that you’re aware of any potential issues. The disadvantages include:

  • Aesthetics — When it comes to looks, above-ground pools might not look as good as the in-ground ones. Plus, there’s not much you can do about the way they look on the outside.
  • No added property value — These pools don’t add value to your home. So, if you’re looking to sell it at some point, don’t expect the price to go up just because you have an above-ground pool in your backyard.
  • Not as durable, and options are limited — No pool lasts forever, and while the maintenance is easy, their durability doesn’t impress. Plus, if you want a custom pool or cool features, your options are pretty limited.

How to Make a Decision

Weighing the pros and cons sometimes seems like an impossible task. However, you just need to consider your needs and purchasing power. Take into account all of the pros and cons before making a rash decision. If you need more convincing, take a peek at the DMG Pools gallery to see if above-ground pools are something you want.

How to Plan the Perfect Fourth of July Pool Party

How to Plan the Perfect Fourth of July Pool Party

Are you ready to beat the heat with an awesome Fourth of July pool party? This patriotic holiday is just around the corner, and it’s time to start planning for the epic summer event. Great music, refreshing snacks, and friendly water sports and activities are just a few of the things that will make your pool party one to remember. There is no better way to celebrate, than with your family and friends right in your backyard!

Decorate with Spirit

There are many ways to decorate your backyard with Independence Day theme colors. Blow up red, white, and blue balloons and throw them into your pool, or place them all over your outdoor space. Get creative with lounge popsicle pool floats and flag-themed donut floats for the guests that want to be carried away by smooth waves. Throw in a couple of color themed beach balls into the pool as well. You can even invest in some red or blue lights to keep the party alive throughout the night.

Snack and Drink Ideas to Refresh the Guests

Everything tastes better when it’s eaten or sipped beside a poolside. That being said, snacks and drinks are a pool party must! Any refreshment that is made with fruits is an excellent choice. For a fancy, but simple snack, watermelon feta salad is the way to go. If you want some protein options, deviled eggs are a summer staple. For something more traditional, Texas caviar is another favorite.

As for drinks, remember to have lots of water! This will keep your guests hydrated and happy. However, in order to entertain a majority of your guests, you will need more than just water. Make cucumber water and lemonade for the kids. As for the adults, cold beer and fruity mixed drinks will liven them up.

Activities and Pool Games

Entertainment is essential for the perfect pool party. There are many activities that will get everyone active, no matter the age. A cornhole set by the poolside will get some friendly competition started outside of the pool. Water balloons will keep little kids entertained for hours. You can install a pool volleyball net or a basketball hoop for those that want to test their athletic skills. Coin diving, giant Jenga, floatie races, chicken fight, and Marco Polo are other great activities to play. And remember to keep your guests motivated with popular music and celebration songs.

Pool Party Necessities

Sometimes, it’s easy to get caught up in the fun, creative aspects of planning a Fourth of July pool party. However, safety is a top priority. Remember to provide lots of sunscreen to protect yourselves from the intense sun. Have shaded areas where your guests can cool off. Have extra flip flops and towels for guests that might forget theirs. And if you want to keep your house clean, provide a space where your guests can change out of their wet clothes.

Pool Shapes to Fit Your Wants and Needs

Summer is the perfect time to take a dip or relax next to your beautiful pool. Oh, you don’t have one? Don’t worry because DMG Pool Builders has your back! Before you decide on the kind of pool you want, it’s imperative to do some research. To make your swimming pool stand out and fit in, let’s discuss the most popular custom pool shapes of 2021. The kind of shape you’re going for can depend on a variety of things, of course. And while all pool types have their pros and cons, here are some pool shapes you can get the most out of.

Rectangular Pool Shapes: Always a Go-To

Rectangles are still one of the most popular pool shapes. There’s just so much you can do with them! Even though these pools may seem simple, it’s easy to give them a unique flair. You can do that by simply playing with sharp edges. For example, giving your pool’s edges a different cut will result in a rectangular Grecian pool. In short, the simplicity and customizability of the shape are what make opting for a rectangular pool worth it.

Freeform Pool Shapes: Your Safest Bet

When it comes to ease of design, freeform pools are your safest bet. Sharp lines don’t fit into every backyard, so let’s talk about curves!

What makes this group of shapes so popular is versatility. That, of course, is what guarantees uniqueness because no two freeform shapes can be the same. If you want a little bit of guidance or inspiration, there are many curvy styles to mimic and choose from. Make your pool look like an oasis, a mountain pond, or stick to the trusty kidney shape!

No need to worry about the possible complexity of your freeform design because if you can picture it, we can make it!

Roman Pool Shapes: A Piece of History in Your Backyard

If you’re looking for something more sophisticated, single and double Roman pools are a perfect choice. These pools are essentially rectangular with oval elements. However, simplicity doesn’t stop them from being so magnificent.

Roman pools get their name because they resemble baths from ancient Rome. Knowing that is enough to make anybody want to have them. Combine them with a quality vinyl liner or a mosaic for a striking look. With these swimming pools, you can decide to keep the original shape or play around with oval elements’ placement.

Letter-shaped Pools: Fun and Authentic

These shapes can’t always be made into swimming pools, mainly due to space constraints. But if you have a backyard big enough to allow for it, this can be a great design for you.

So, how do you decide on a letter? Just choose a favorite! This is a great way to put a unique stamp that will bring your family home together. For example, it can be the first letter of your family’s last name.  If you’re not too picky about letters, the most popular one is definitely “L”. The fun thing is that you can even spell a whole word if you want to!

How to Maintain Your Vinyl Pool

How to Maintain Your Vinyl Pool

Vinyl pools are a great addition to your home, but like anything else, they need continuous maintenance. They are inexpensive to install, but if they aren’t properly cared for, they won’t last very long. Luckily, there are some simple steps and routines you can take to prolong your vinyl pool’s life. Once you get into a habit, the maintenance will be minimal to keep the pool in top shape.

Keep Your Pool Clean

No one wants to take a swim and be surrounded by dead bugs and soggy leaves. Instead of having to pick each one out individually, there are easy ways of preventing it from happening in the first place, as well as tools for cleaning that will save you time. Invest in a vinyl pool liner vacuum and use it regularly on the bottom of the pool. This will keep debris, mold, and algae from building up.

You should also use a pool cover. Make it fits your pool securely, so no foreign particles or bugs can get in from the top, or the sides of the pool. The pool cover performs many functions. First, it keeps water from evaporating, saving you money on water costs. Second, tarps or pool covers can help keep the water at the perfect temperature. Third, you will spend less time cleaning the water, and it will prevent staining on the liner from dirt or leaves.

Vinyl liner is sensitive to rips and tears. Invest in a soft nylon pool brush that is specifically made for vinyl pools, and gently scrub the pool’s sides. Keep the deck and surrounding areas clean too. Leaf skimmers will get rid of those mushy leaves and keep your pool’s surface clear. There are professional cleaning solutions that you can buy when using these tools as well. It is highly recommended to get your pool cleaned by professionals at least once a year, to lengthen your pool’s lifespan.

Correct Chemicals Levels

Having the proper pH levels allows chlorine to kill threats, such as algae and bacteria. Your pool needs proper water balance in order to maximize its life and appearance. If the pool is frequently used, the water should be tested twice daily with a DPD kit, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The pH level should be between 7.4-7.8. This will effectively kill germs, prevent the liner from wrinkling, and won’t irritate swimmers’ skin. Free chlorine should be between 1.5 and 2.5 ppm to stop algae and bacteria from growing; however, if it is higher than this, the liner will get wrinkled. When mixing in chemicals, do one at a time and wait until it dissolves before adding the second one.

Your Pool Should Always Have Water

Water keeps the vinyl liner from wrinkling, rising, shrinking, or bubbling. It’s never a good idea to drain the water because your pool might lose its shape. Water provides pressure that keeps your pool intact. There is no need to get rid of the water if you perform regular maintenance. If you need to drain some of the water for whatever reason, contact DMG Pools to get professional advice before you take action.
